Do you need to scan passport books?
Choose the GC2500e or the GC2500u. The 960CDX, 850DX and 2000 take cards, not passport books.

Do you need to read a magnetic stripe?
Choose the 960CDX, which has a 3-track magnetic stripe reader.
Do you need both sides of an ID card in one pass?
The 850DX, 960CDX, GC2500e and GC2500u are duplex: front and back, simultaneously, with no need to flip the card. The 2000 captures one side at a time. All of them capture only the photo data page of a passport - there is nothing useful on the back cover to scan.

Is a dedicated PC at every scan station acceptable?
If not, choose the GC2500e: it needs no dedicated Windows PC.
A single workstation, as simple as possible?
Choose the GC2500u, or the 2000 for entry-level simplex capture.
Package requirements: the 2000 requires APX-BASIC and the 850DX is APX-BASIC compatible; the 960CDX, GC2500e and GC2500u require APX-ADV.
